Each member of this team is between the ages of 14 to 20 years of age, each member of this team averages 2800 hours per year at numerous events; each member of our team is required to have excellent grades per semester; and, each member of our team is a leader among their peers.
Currently, we see youth values deteriorating within society. Teens are among the top statistics in violence, suicides and deaths. Today’s chances of our youth growing up to become adults; unscarred by societies pressures, with a positive and healthy outlook, without being anchored by weight problems, health issues, teen pregnancy, alcoholism, drug addictions, gang affiliations, STD or AIDS – are already very slim.
The Clay County Sheriffs Office Explorer team is number one at keeping those statistics down; hence we are part of the unknown and the unnavigated.
For each of these men and women that are in our team not only have a position where they can be seen and heard, but also in position to use each talent that they possess. These young men and women SHINE!
Each of the explorers travel together as a unit to other agencies, businesses, local events, regional venues, special events and schools assisting the public in services you don’t see everyday, but you definitely use everyday.
- Parking at venues, you see our youth sweating under the hot sun, cold winds, and rain, trying to keep chaos among the impatient drivers in an organized fashion. These young men and women train for hours simply practicing their skills so that parking in orderly fashion is smooth. We keep in mind flow of traffic, direction of travel in people, and above all safety. We average the number of vehicles that we assist to park, per year between 150,000 to 175,000 vehicles in Clay County.
- Fingerprinting – Youth are constantly in danger, you see it on the news in forms of child abductions, runaways, truancy etc. According to US census bureau in 2005, Clay County has population of 171,095 people. Children under the age of 5 is 6.2%, youth under the age of 18 is 25.7% Explorers annually fingerprint 5,000 to 7,000 youth between the ages of birth to adult. Plus, we not only cover youth who live in Clay county, but also Duval, St Johns, Putnam, Bradford, and Baker. So what are the chances that our Explorers helped to safeguard your child?
Each young woman and young man in this team represents a desire to be the best, and we provide the best services to other non-profit agencies, local businesses, and special events county-wide. We believe each member of our team is highly intelligent and so we provide the best training with self-defense, shooting range skills, team-building exercises, debate, delegate, and law enforcement education. We provide them hands on training outside the classroom in the form of ‘ride along programs’ where each team member rides with a deputy to apply their knowledge.
Majority of our youth have followed into careers into law enforcement positions within the county, state, or federal. In addition, the Department of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, and the military, plus we are a non-profit 501 C3 designation. We believe that this training will apply to every area of their life, because we all know it is a war out there, and we want our youth prepared for Life.
Tell me, would you feel safer knowing that there are teams like ours out there, educating, creating and shaping a better youth of tomorrow? Or would you prefer to watch the news and see what is really out there?
We thought so…
